New Features
The 4xe is the first plugin hybrid in the venerable Wrangler lineup. Packing a 400V, 17kWh battery pack slotted neatly beneath the second row seat, the 4xe fuses excellent performance with impressive off-road capability to take the model to a new level.
Design
From the exterior, there's no clue that the 4xe is a plugin hybrid rather than a traditional gas-driven Wrangler. The jaunty square lines and high ground clearance follow the same body dimensions of the 4xe's siblings, with the battery pack taking up neither cabin space nor below-body room. However, the size demands of the battery mean the 4xe is only available in the four-door format, without the two-door options available in other Wrangler trims.
Performance
The gas section of the powertrain comprises a powerful 2.0L turbo engine, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and full-time all-wheel drive. Dual electric motors bring the combined output up to 375 horsepower and 470lb-ft of torque, an impressive amount of power by any standard. The benefits of the hybrid powertrain show up most strongly when the Wrangler is taken into more extreme off-road conditions. With its instant torque, the Jeep responds immediately to a touch of the gas pedal, giving excellent close handling on gradients when a traditional drivetrain might slide out of control. However, a 40km electric range and fuel economy of 4.7L / 100km only add to the hybrid's allure.
Infotainment
Although the 4xe is perfect for taking into the wilderness, its advanced technology ensures you stay in touch. There's a choice of 7" or 8.4" infotainment touchscreens available, both with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard, and navigation as an optional extra.
Safety
All versions of the 4xe include forward collision warnings, blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alerts, and automatic emergency braking. An essential off-road upgrade is the front camera perched on the hood, removing the blind spot just ahead of the grille to give a clearer view of the terrain.
